What is an egg allergy?

The 4 proteins that are allergens in eggs
A hen's egg white contains 4 proteins that are potential allergens:
- ovomucoid
- ovalbumin
- ovotransfferin and
- lysozyme
It is the protein ovalbumin, which is the major allergen and it makes up fifty percent of an egg white.
The yolk of a hen's egg also contains proteins however these proteins are seldom allergens. The proteins are:
- apovitellenins I
- apovitellenins VI
- phosvitin
When should I feed my baby egg yolks?
As mentioned, egg yolk allergy is very rare. If your family has a history of egg allergies, then it is best to wait until after 12 months old to introduce egg yolks. There are ways of preparing egg yolks so that the white is not eaten however it is possible that some of the egg white protein may still be on the yolk itself.
Can my baby eat baked goods with whole eggs in them?
Many pediatricians will say that using a whole egg in a baked good recipe (for the non-allergic baby/child) is fine for the infant who is between 8-9 months old.
If your baby has had any reactions to foods that you are sure of, it is probably best to use a substitute for eggs in the recipes.

Sometimes normally thriving breastfed babies pass a motion as infrequently as once every three or five days. This does not mean that the baby is constipated unless the stool is hard (which is unlikely in an exclusively breastfed baby).
Do green motions mean that the baby is not getting enough milk
No, that is another myth. Again, the number of times the baby passes urine is an indicator of his good health or otherwise. If the baby is active and passes urine normally, the green motions are normal. Creamy Plum Popsicles (7 months+)

4 oz (1/2 cup) fresh plums, peeled, pitted and chopped
3 oz (1/3 cup) pureed peach
5 oz (2/3 cup)
drop vanilla essence
Spoon into popsicle (lolly) moulds and freeze unitl firm.
If your baby is too young to handle popsicles, simply crush the frozen mixture in a bowl and serve with a spoon.

Baked Pumpkin Slices (8-10 months)

halve a sugar pumpkin then cut into slices as you would a melon

pat slices with a wee bit of butter (or olive oil if you prefer) then place slices on a greased (olive oil) baking sheet and sprinkle lightly with water

drizzle with pure maple syrup or sprinkle slices with brown sugar (if desired) and then sprinkle cinnamon, nutmeg and a pinch of ginger.
- We like to mix these spices together first for an even mix so that no one spice overpowers the other.
Pumpkin, Banana & Peaches (6-8 months)
½ cup pumpkin puree (fresh or canned)
1 pear, peeled & cored & diced
1peach – peeled, pitted & diced
Combine all food (steam pear and peach together if need be and mash or puree if needed.
How do I cook a Pumpkin?
Pumpkins may be poached, boiled, steamed or baked. Please be aware that Pumpkins tend to loose their nutritive value with prolonged cooking. Baking pumpkins for homemade baby food will ensure the most nutrients are retained for your baby. A Pumpkin must be cooked immediately after you have cut it open or you will find a brownish-blackish mold begin to immediately set into the flesh.
Once cooked, Pumpkin should be used and/or chilled immediately. If you will not be using the cooked pumpkin immediately, store it either pureed or in the cooked chunks, in the freezer. it does freeze well! The cooked pumpkin will turn a brownish orange so don't be alarmed when you peak into the bowl and find that colour.
Baking pumpkins, like many other fruits/squashes may be the best choice of cooking for optimal flavor and nutrient retention!
